The UK Government not long ago voiced which it will deliver Early Intervention in England. The British Stammering Association has been fighting for this for fifteen years, since it will concede 9 out of 10 of those immature young kids during risk of determined vague to speak …

“are you on a mobile mate *click*” seems like a day to day thing now. its really painful.
im a fully trained bartender with cocktail experience and a trained restuarant manager. …but over the past year its been nearly impossible to find a job because in interviews they seem to think im not able to do the job required just because of the my speech.
im 24 years old.

My friend has a stammer and most girls find it endearing. It’s nothing to be ashamed about.

These are my tips;
When you are struggling, think of another word to replace that one
Be calm, sometimes i speak like im half asleep, but it works!
If you get stuck, change the word!
If you feel the bloackage, stop, and say it softly.
At a loud bar, speak loudly! everyone may here you, but becuase you are not talking normally your stammer will go(like singing)
When i talk to someone i try not give much eye contact, makes me feel more calm becuase i dont think of them looking at me.

I’ve reached a point in my life where i am going to change this. I’ve been to speach therpy, but nothing can cure this except me! I need to learn what works for me, and what affects my speach, e.g alchol, lack of sleep, loudness in a room, nervousness and stress! My dad, gran and my dads friend have a stammer, but they are very able to control theirs, and you would never know that they have a stammer. My dad cured his by speaking fast and changing the word of what he is trying to say.

I have had a stammer all my life, im 18 now, so im always going out to places and meeting people, and girls! I am nervous with girls, i dont want them to hear or see me stammer and for them to think something of me. At a bar i will try and speak to people and i will stammer and they ask if im drunk! its really hard, but sometimes i have to agree. I try different techniques, i’ve been to speach therapy and Michael Pailin centre, i’ve been on many news channels a few years back doing interviews.

On a side note to this, I`ve watched your video a couple of times now and I can completely connect with all the situations you have stated. The worst moment (and best) was the speech I gave a my wedding. Looking back on the videos it`s never as bad as what I thought, as I had the support of everyone around me but sympathy is not needed just more understanding. More like this on YouTube are definitely needed.

Every respect to you in posting this vid. I`ve stuttered all my life and so has my father so from what research i`ve done it can be hereditary. In my younger years the anxiety I suffered compounded the problem but in later life I`m learning to deal with this and things have improved. I try to think that I my friends and family aren`t bothered by it then why should I. Those who make fun are not worth knowing

Hello Ollie. This is a difficult question, which many people have asked, and few have been entirely happy with the answer. So, as with hotbody below, I think the best thing to do is to talk about it. You could start by ringing the British Stammering Association helpline. It’s run by a team of people who know only too well how hard it can be to stammer and talk on the telephone. YouTube are preventing me from putting the phone number here, so I’ve just added it in the info panel. Good luck.

I Stammer, and it’s quite bad, i cant read a whole sentence. It gets very frustrating, and i really need help, speech therapist hasnt worked, and im getting fed up, How do you cope with it?
May 18th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
I’ve been hiding it my whole life, yes by overcoming I mean I will finally come out with it and not care what people think and hopefully become a doctor like I want. My whole life i’ve been this fake person who I am not, it really sucks, stuttering kills you completely but you must recover you know how it is. Like I said I’ve been hiding it my whole life and the only person who knows the real me is me, thank you for trying to gain support in this ‘hidden’ disease.
May 18th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
Good for you, hotbody1869. When you say ‘overcome’ it, think about whether your main aim should be fluent speech or acceptance of the fact that you stammer. It’s strange, but I think that people are not likely to get very far with speaking more fluently until they have accepted that they have a stammer.
May 18th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
Thanks for spreading the word out, I stutter and it dropped my confidence level so much. I’m getting better though, and hopefully I will overcome it soon.
May 18th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
By the way can I just say I love that ending to this video, where you say “…if you knew exactly what you wanted to say but you couldn’t actually say it”, taking in mind all the stammering videos on here which show people struggling with their speech. Good on you, Leys

and the funny thing is, i know so many people who stammer in particular, i would have never noticed you did in day to day life. i speak to so many people who take their time with their words, that the quick flow is almost the speech impediment to me.
May 18th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
well, i stammered as a child and still stutter and stammer.. but only like once every few months. i have to be really run down or angry for it to come out.
and i never faced that.
while i see the media sometimes throws in the speech impediment for colour, they do it to so many different types of people and in inane topics, i don’t understand taking it personally. laughing at yourself is a virtue, to me.
in real life, anyone mocking you is blatantly stupid, so i find it easy to ignore
May 18th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
Yes, you’re right, pixeltastic, everything is laughed at, some time. But the difficulty with stammering is that so many people have no idea how frustrating it can be. Then, to make things worse, we stammerers are not well equipped to fight back. So, as I am offended by the jokes, I am fighting back by putting up a video.
May 18th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
while i understand feeling victimised, everything is made into a joke at some point and it’s up to the individual to be offended.

No, Rungold315, the root cause is the neurological condition – but, yes, it will certainly be affected by circumstances and our feelings. So you are right when you say that the more you worry about it, the worse it will be. Like I said below, it’s a bit like having a bad leg: you can walk OK, but when you try to run that puts more stress on it and you will limp and there is a greater risk of falling down. Some people have started stammering after a bad accident involving a head injury.
May 18th, 2009 at 3:04 pm
I wanted to say this in my other comment but didnt have room-I bet ANYTHING, if a stutterer got into a car accident and became stricken with amnesia, they would NOT stutter upon speaking again. Why? The nervous, tense, low-self esteem-fueled thoughts would be forgotten. Why do I stress this? Because I can easily speak anytime I am extremely happy or if im so busy with something that I FORGET TO WORRY to stutter. Get it? This is just my personal theory, but I think others have expressed the same.

I am a 21 year old male in college. Ive been stuttering on and off since chidhood, but I am stuttering now agan. What I do remember though, is that particularly in high school I didnt stutter! I FORGOT I was a stutterer. However, ever since I started up again, I am always telling myself I will stutter and this anxious, nervous, “im gonna fail” attitude is what keeps my stutter alive. My point?Im almost positive the root of all adult stuttering is the nervous thoughts associated with it.
